Sometimes for some, unknown reason, a pair of Oscars will continually eat batch after batch of eggs. If you have a pair of Oscars that are eggeaters then it may be that you will have to hatch them artificially. It is fairly easy to remove the eggs and hatch them providing you have the right set up. To hatch the eggs artificially you will need:
Carefully lower the bucket into the water near to where the Oscars have laid there eggs.Whilst using the large net to gently move away the Oscars from the eggs ,use your other hand to pick the eggs up and place them in the bucket.Remove the bucket from the water and put a length of airline. with an airstone underneath the slate and place the slate at an angle of around 45 degrees. Connect the airline to the pump and ensure a slow flow of bubbles from the pipe. the flow of air will agitate the water and move fresh oxygenated water over the eggs mimicking the fanning of the eggs by the parents. Ensure that the temperasture is between 78 and 82 degrees either with a heater or by floating it in the tank from which it has jut come. Then add some methylene blue so that the water is dark blue. This will help to stop the infertile eggs fungussing and the fungus spreading to fertile eggs. You can then leave the eggs for 3 days 72 hours to hatch. The eggs will hatch at roughly the same time that they were laid, which is normally in the afternoon between 2pm to 6 pm. At this time your Oscars will not be happy having lost there eggs, it is a good idea to feed them some live feed perhaps river shrimp so that they are distracted from what has happened. A good healthy pair of Oscars with good water quality will spawn again as soon as 11 days after the current spawning. I have had Oscars sapwn whilst they still have free swimming fry in the tank.
