Once
the fry are free swimming they will become eating machines, possibly 100's of
them. You will need copious amounts of food and excellent water conditions.
I recommend that you change around 20% of the water every other day to start
with. If you have other tanks it would be wise to split the batch up. Grade
them if you can so that you put all the fast growers in one tank and the slower
growers in the other tank.Try to split them up into as many smaller tanks as
you can or if you only have 1 tank ensure it is a large tank. The larger the
amount of water you keep the babies in the better chance you have of growing
on a large batch. All fish give off pheremones to stunt the growth of the fry
around them, by changing some of the water for fresh water you will dilute the
amount of stunting pheremone in the water and this will allow them to grow faster. If
you have have albinos in your batch then you must seperate them so that they
are not in with reds or tigers. They will not do well because the others will
bite out their eyes. You will be able to tell the Albinos straight away as thay
are a lighter colour than reds and tigers. At first the fry will take microworms
and brine shrimp but once they start to grow you will need to feed them other
foods. I feed mine on a beefheart recipe if you scour the internet you will
find lots of different ones just pick one they are all pretty much the same.
The growth and health of your baby Oscars will depend upon the amount of time
that you have spare to tend them. the more often you change some of the water
the faster they will grow. The more often you feed them will, also lead to faster
growth however you will need to ensure that the water quality is good at all
times. Syphon off any uneaten food and give the tank a really good claen every
week. take time out to watch your babaies and cull any deformed fish. This may
not be easy for some but is essential , I just throw the deformed ones back
into the large Oscar tank and let them eat them. Thgis is waht would would happen
to them in the wild. good luck with your batchj and if you breed your oscars
let me know , if you have any pics please send them to me and Iwill load them
onto the site.
