The
best way to obtain a pair of Oscars for breeding is to start with a group of
Oscars. I would recommend a group of between 4-6 Oscars so that you have the
best possible chance of getting a pair. The problem with trying to get a pair
of Oscars is that they are unsexable unless in breeding condition making it
impossible to pick out a pair when they are young. The problem that this creates
is that you will need a large tank to start with to ensure that your Oscars
grow properly. I would recommend a 125 gallon minimum for six Oscars with a
really good filtration system and a weekly maintenance regime of 20% water changes
to ensure good health and maximum growth. Once the Oscars reach 15-18 months
they are sexually mature and will begin to pair off, providing the conditions
in the tank are suitable. You will notice that two of the Oscars will begin
to swim together and will take over one particular part of the tank driving
off the other Oscars away from there chosen part of the tank. At this time it
is best to remove them to a tank on their own so that they can spawn with no
other fish around. It is possible for them to spawn in a tank with other oscars
around but you will have to remove the eggs to hatch them artificially
